Aroha n. Love, compassion, and empathetic regard (Maori).
Aroha is a Maori word often translated as love, but in practice it reaches further: compassion, respect, generosity, and the willingness to care for people in ways they can actually feel. It is not only an emotion; it is a social ethic. Aroha appears in how we speak, how we host, how we forgive, and how we make room for one another with dignity.
In contemporary use, aroha is both personal and communal. It can describe tenderness between individuals, but also the wider obligation to strengthen collective wellbeing. When people say a decision should be made with aroha, they usually mean it should be kind without being weak, principled without being cold, and grounded in the good of the whole.

At many marae gatherings in Aotearoa New Zealand, newcomers can arrive as complete strangers and leave with new "aunties," "uncles," and cousins by dinner time.
