Love Quotes

"Awake my heart, to be loved, awake, awake!

- Robert Bridges

"I have learned not to worry about love; but to honour its coming with all my heart."

- Alice Walker

"Suddenly the window of my heart flew open this morning,

the window that looks out on your heart.

I wondered to see that the name by which you know me is written in

April leaves and flowers, and I sat silent."

- Rabrindranath Tagore

Love Poem:

"Come away! Come sweet Love!

The golden morning wastes,

While the sun, from his sphere,

His fiery arrows casts,

Making all the shadows fly,

Playing, staying, in the grove

To entertain the stealth of love.

Thither, sweet Love, let us hie

Flying, dying in desire,

Winged with sweet hopes and

heavenly fire."

Like Math?

Love cannot be defined in any single word or group of words. It's like math; a simple idea that can get very complicated.  Specifically, love is like pi - natural, irrational, and very important.  It's like realizing the formula for the meaning of life, an elusive yet simple and immaculate equation that reaches to infinity.  To love another is to see the face of God.

“I see the eigenvalue in thine eye,

I hear the tender tensor in thy sigh.

Bernoulli would have been content to die.

Had he but know such a-squared cos 2(phi)!”

-  Stanislaw Lem, Cyberiad

And all the charms of face or voice

Which I in others see

Are but the recollected choice

Of what I feel for thee.

- John Clare

Some Nice Old Valentine Customs

Some, once popular, valentine symbols are no longer commonly used today. One of these is the true-love knot. This knot consists of graceful loops, sometimes in the shape of a heart, with no beginning and no end. On these loops are written endless love messages which are read by turning the knot around.

Young men and women in the Middle Ages drew names from a bowl to see who would be their valentines. The names would be worn on their sleeves for one week. Wearing your heart on your sleeve has since come to mean that you readily let others see your feelings.

On the Roman holiday Lupercal (February 14th) the blood of sacrificed goats was smeared on two special young men who would run around the streets of Rome carrying strips of goat hide.  Women would try to be beaten with these strips which were known as februa (purifiers). February thus gets its name as the month of purification.

Parting Thoughts

Love comes to you... and then after.

"The strongest and sweetest songs yet remain to be sung."

-Walt Whitman

"For one human being to love another, that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation."
- Rainer Maria Rilke

If you are not a poet, perhaps you can be the poem.

"It (love) is easier to resist at the beginning than at the end." - Leonardo da Vinci
